Student Grants

Paleontological Society Student Research Grants

The Paleontological Society invites applications from student members for a limited number of $1200 research grants. Undergraduate and graduate students conducting research on any aspect of paleontology may apply. International students are eligible. The top three proposals will receive Mid-America Paleontology Society (MAPS) Outstanding Research Awards. Click here for complete information.

Professional Grants

Paleontological Society Arthur James Boucot Research Grants

The Arthur James Boucot Research Grants are funded by an endowment generously provided by Art and Barbara Boucot to support early career paleontologists with a PhD to conduct research in the fields of morphology, taxonomy, and biostratigraphy, working on any taxa. These grants support original research via payments to postdoctoral students, assistant professors (pre-tenure), and other early career paleontologists, with the possible exception of an occasional individual deemed to be unusually qualified. Paleontologists must be associated with universities, institutes, and academies of science or equivalent institutions. The grants support research on morphology, taxonomy, and biostratigraphy and cannot be used for institutional overhead, publication costs, or modeling studies that rely upon fossil or modern databases. Click here for complete information.

Norman Newell Early Career Grant Program

The Norman Newell Grants complement the Arthur Boucot Grants to support early career paleontologists for research projects in areas not covered by the Boucot Grant areas of morphology, taxonomy, and biostratigraphy. Applicants can only apply to one of these early career grants per funding year. To broaden the reach of Paleontological Society funds, recipients of a Newell Grant may not apply for a Boucot Grant, nor may they apply for a second Newell Grant. Similarly, recipients of a Boucot grant may not apply for a Newell Grant. Awards are made directly to individuals and not to institutions, and awards cannot be used for salary, stipends, tuition, or institutional overhead. Click here for complete information.

Sepkoski Grants (Paleontological Society International Research Program)

Sepkoski Grants (PalSIRP) are named in honor of Dr. J. John Sepkoski, Jr., founder of the program.  Dr. Sepkoski died at age 50 in 1999.

The Paleontological Society is pleased to announce continuation of its expanded small grants program for paleontologists living in republics of the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and Mongolia; Central and South America and island nations of the Caribbean (excluding possessions and territories of the USA and western Europe); the continent of Africa; southern Asia (including Taiwan, excluding Japan, North and South Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Israel, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Syria) and island nations of the Indian and Pacific Oceans (excluding Australia and New Zealand).  Click here for complete information.
