PS Student Rep Applications

The Paleontological Society is soliciting applications for a Student Representative to Council.

Eligibility: We encourage nominations from paleontology graduate students who are early-mid stage in their graduate programs from all backgrounds and institutions, particularly those that have historically been under-represented on the Paleontological Society Council.
The Role: Student Representatives serve as voices for student needs in the Society and play leading roles in student activities including organizing student events at the Geological Society of America Conference. Student Representatives are further encouraged to develop and lead new student initiatives. In this role, students gain knowledge of the inner-workings of an international organization and experience in professional service.
The selected Student Representative (who will start their role in the fall) will join current Student Representative Carmi Milagros Thompson and serve a two-year term (Fall 2024–Fall 2026). Student Representatives attend two virtual Council meetings per year (one during fall near the time of the Geological Society of America Conference and the other during spring).
Application Instructions and Requirements:

To apply, complete the Google Form located here:

The application consists of approximately paragraph length responses to the following questions:

  • Why do you want to be a Student Representative?
  • Previous experience, if any, of student leadership and/or organizing events.
  • What would you hope to achieve as as a Student Representative (e.g. projects, events, increasing student engagement, etc)?
  • Your expected workload and capacity to fulfill the duties of this role after the GSA meeting in 2024 through the end of GSA of 2026 (e.g. will you be able to attend and plan for the events taking place in the annual GSA meetings in-person in 2025 and 2026? Will you be able to attend the semi-annual council meetings online?)

Additionally, please include the email of a letter writer or nominator at the bottom of the form. They must be an academic mentor or other faculty member at your home institution.

When you complete the form, please provide the email address of your nominator or letter writer, and an invitation to submit their letter (part 3 of the application) will automatically be sent. Please confirm with your letter writer that they have received confirmation of submission by the deadline below.  Your recommenders can also use the following link to submit your letters of recommendation:

The Deadline for consideration is February 16, 2024.

The new Student Representative will be selected in March. Please feel free to contact the current Student Representatives, Sam Ocon and Carmi Milagros Thompson, at [email protected] with additional questions or if you experience any difficulty with the submission forms.
